They say that the inhabitants of El Hierro are like one big family where everyone knows each other.
The most important holiday of all is the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes (Descent of the Virgin) celebrated every four years at the beginning of July (the next one will be held in 2009). This procession of dancers with multicoloured caps, castanets, and classic red and white costumes parades the image of the virgin from its hermitage to the town of Valverde.
The rest of the holidays are shared by the different villages throughout the year. Each local patron has a holiday which is celebrated with a procession, lucha canaria (Canary wrestling), dancing and other folk activities. |
