If you find yourself staring out your window on a dark and snowy day, the
winter wind biting at your nose and numbing your fingers, don´t you wish
that you can get away from it all?
Then why not go on a
Gran Canaria
holiday?
If you look at a
map, you will find that Gran Canaria lies southwest of Spain and
northwest of Africa. The unique location, the features of the island, and the influence
of the Gulf Stream trade winds result in amazingly pleasant
weather that lasts the whole year round.
Because of this unusual and amazing
climate, Syracuse University of New York, USA conducted a research of the island and they concluded that Gran Canaria, particularly,
Las Palmas, is one of the cities with the most ideal climate in the world. This declaration
has bolstered the morale of its inhabitants and assures the islands of a never-ending influx
of tourists who come to see it for themselves and enjoy that diverse climate. In addition,
the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), declared Gran
Canaria a Biosphere Reserve (a paradise-like environment) under its protection as a testament
to the island´s natural beauty.
In Gran Canaria, temperatures range in the low to middle 20s in January and February with
high humidity which brings in rainy and windy weather. Sunny weather sets in around March or
April and temperatures can also climb to a high of 35 degrees Centigrade (95 degrees Fahrenheit)
in July and August though occasionally, it could go as high as 40 degrees Centigrade in certain
periods of time. As a result, one can enjoy spring-like weather in the north, and summer yet
still enjoyable weather in the south all at the same time.
These diverse climate and weather conditions vary depending on a particular part of the
island and on the seasons. The north and central part of the island (where the capital, Las
Palmas, is located) is generally cooler owing to its mountainous region. Because of this, it
often gets a lot of wind, clouds and rain. Vegetation in the area gets irrigated and is endowed
with picturesque forests that host a variety of flora and fauna. In winter, snowfall is very
common in the mountains. On the other hand, the southern portion of the island gets more sun and
heat, but the trade winds and air currents make the
weather bearable and the ideal place for a
holiday for people who want to have fun under the sun. The city of Puerto Rico (not to be mistaken
for the Caribbean island) is a major resort area that is bustling with life. Tourists and frolickers
troop to the nearby
hotels in order to be close to the pristine beaches.
Maspalomas, aside from its fine beaches, boasts of high sand dunes that make one feel they
are in the Sahara Desert. Don´t miss the camel rides and sand boarding. They are always an instant hit
with young and old alike.
