When it comes to golf tourism, Gran Canaria has a distinct competitive advantage over other destinations in the world on account of the climate and the fact that it is possible to practise this sport 365 days of the year. The island played a pioneering role with regard to golf in Spain, as the first golf course in the country was built at Escaleritas in 1891, followed by another in Bandamas in 1957. The first members of the Club Decano de España (known today as Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas) were members of the English colony on Gran Canaria, providing another example of the strong influence that Britain had on the birth of the island´s tourism industry.
Despite the fact that Gran Canaria was a pioneer in including this sport, the development of the
island's golfing infrastructure initially lagged behind that of other destinations, with most of the
golf courses being of relatively recent construction, which means a clear advantage for the island as
it has modern golf courses adapted to the most demanding golf players.
Four new golf courses are currently under construction. The golf courses have been designed by the most prestigious international golf course designers and they all boast exceptional features. There is no doubt why national and international tournaments are held throughout the year. The golf courses on Gran Canaria have another important competitive advantage, namely their price, which is well below the average in other areas. The 18-hole courses on the island charge a green fee of around Euros 50 during off-season (from May to September) and around Euros 70 during the rest of the year, which make them even more appealing when you take into account the quality of the facilities and installations they offer. 0034 928 350 104 Real Club de Golf de Las PalmasGran Canaria enjoys the distinction of housing the oldest golf club in Spain. It was inaugurated on 17th December 1891 on a site known as Lomo del Polvo. In 1956 it was transferred to the plains of Bandama, situated close to an extinct volcano with a diameter of 800 m. and a depth of 200 m. This is a testimony to the volcanic origins of Gran Canaria some 14 million years ago.
The course has wonderful views of spectacular, deep ravines. Designed by Mackenzie Ross, it is a par
71, 18-hole course, with 2 putting greens, one of which is floodlit, a practice tee, pitching green,
instructors, pro-shop, club hire service, a restaurant and an excellent wine cellar. 0034 928 711 111 El Cortijo Club de CampoThis course has been the venue for important international championships as well as the centre for the Peugeot Oki Tour and the Professional Senior and Women´s Spanish Championships.
Just six kilometres from the city of Las Palmas de
Gran Canaria, this course was designed by Blake
Stirling (Head Designer of Pete Dye) and Marco Martín, and with up to six tees per hole, offers
greater variety and difficulty. It has quick greens and the course boasts six lakes and more than six
hundred century-old palm trees. 0034 928 684 890El Cortijo Golf CenterThis 54-par course is considered by experts to be one of the best in the world and is a small replica of the best American courses. But do not be deluded, its 18-hole par 54 course has all the obstacles of any normal golf course, such as spectacular lakes and sand bunkers which make a marvellous contrast to the green lushness of the course.
The course is next to El Cortijo Country Club and just five minutes from the city of Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria. It is worth pointing out that this is the only floodlit course in
Gran Canaria, permitting golfers
to play at night in magnificent temperatures. 0034 928 762 581 Campo de Golf de MaspalomasMaspalomas is situated in the south-east of the island which is one of the sunniest parts of the world. It is the island´s most important area within the tourist sector, with spectacular beaches of fine, golden sand, and home to both luxury hotels and small developments offering with all the necessary facilities. It is surrounded by the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve (Parque Natural de las Dunas de Maspalomas), a protected area of more than 400 hectares and where the sea and palm trees are silhouetted against the horizon.
Maspalomas golf course is to be found in this paradise. It is surrounded by dunes and these had an
influence on the design of the course, created by Mackenzie Ross. It is an extremely long and flat course,
with lengthy, wide lanes. 0034 928 010 103 Salobre Golf & ResortThis is one of the newest golf courses on the island of Gran Canaria. It is in a typical landscape of the southern part of the island, with avines, volcanic earth, views of mountains and sea. The lush scenery and green gardens are in start contrast with the desert surroundings.
Roland Fauré designed this interesting and demanding course, on wich you have to use all your
skills if you want to be successful. The natural features of the landscape and the autochthonous vegetation
have played an important part. Echoning with the common characteristic of the Gran Canaria countryside, more
than 600 species of plants and trees have been established to give beauty to the area Salobre currently has
a par 71, 18-hole course occupying a 6-kilometre area and a second course is under construction. 0034 696 932 616 Anfi Tauro GolfIt is located in the south of the island, in Mogán municipality.
