THE GRAN CANARIA GET AWAY

"I (had) the time of my life in Gran Canaria!! (Now that I’m home I am) still in mourning!!".

"All in all it was a fantastic holiday. The weather was excellent apart from a few days of cloud".

"Weather good over New Year. One day 27 egrees and never below 20. ..Visit the sand dunes at Maspalomas… They were fantastic - the kids loved jumping down them".

Once they come to visit, more and more people are finding Gran Canaria hard to forget, and what they experience there makes them come back again and again.

As a part of the Canary group of islands, Gran Canaria lies in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 km northwest of Africa. The unique location provides the archipelago with springtime temperature all year round. Aside from the pleasant weather, there are lush forests, exotic plants and animals, dunes like in Sahara, mountains, and volcanic craters, occasional snow on the highest peaks, the most dynamic capital city in the Canaries, incredibly beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches.

Against such a terrific natural backdrop, you will always find many things to do:

Head for the beach!

Approximately 50 of the 236 kilometers of coastline are occupied by many different beaches. Maspalomas, with 250 hectares (618 acres) of dunes by the sea, is unquestionably the focal point. Most of the beaches are found on the southern end of the island, where the climate is sunny and dry.

The best ones are near tourist complexes of different sizes, offering the comfort of a large city in some cases, or the quiet of a small village in others, or the possibility of practicing water sports. The clear skies and good weather makes sunbathing and swimming possible all qyear long.

Lodging is no problem in Maspalomas, it is easy to find a hotel there, as well a wide variety of apartments, shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Explore the Island!

Because the island is relatively small, it is easy to see lots of places in a short time.

Taxis are cheap and plentiful but car hire is the most flexible and convenient alternative.

Driving around, you can meet the friendliest people, enjoy endless breath taking scenery, stumble across huge banana and papaya plantations, appreciate the local architecture, and simply have a good time.

Experience the Local Food!

Fish is naturally fresh and abundant so don´t forget to enjoy some. Typical dishes include "sancocho" - a salted fish soup, "papas arrugadas" - the local potato which resembles a wrinkled, new potato, usually served with "mojo" sauce, (papas con mojo) a spicy, red or green sauce.

The mojo sauce is popular with a lot of food types here as well as the potatoes. Of course there are the Spanish dishes of Paella (a seafood and rice dish) and "Tortilla" - Spanish omelet.

In the residential towns, Spanish cuisine almost always includes a wide selection of "Tapas" (appetizers). When taken together, they can be quite filling and constitute a traditional Spanish meal.

So what is it in Gran Canaria that people find hard to forget and make them visit again and again?
