Tips for making the most of your car hire

Confirm the car has third party insurance.

Take written notes of the condition of the vehicle when you receive it and ask the car hire company to confirm your notes in writing.

Most companies rent their vehicles with a full tank. There is no kilometers limit. You'll get the car with a certain quantity of fuel. The companies generally take a deposit for the case that you do not return the car with the same fuel amount. If you do, then they just give you the deposit back.

In case of an accident or the car is damaged whilst in your care, go to a garage and get a written estimate of the repair costs. Do NOT, however ask the garage to undertake any work. This will be helpful if there is a dispute about the amount the car hire company claims is needed to carry out the repairs to the car.

At the end of the car hire. Try to allow plenty of time to return the car and make sure the car hire company completes the condition report at the end of the car hire. Read the form through carefully. Make notes your self on the condition of the car if there is large spaces on the form, cross through them so that the company can't add anything else later. You are entitled to a copy of the form.

When making payment, don't sign blank credit/debit vouchers if you can possibly avoid it and if you do have to do this, make sure that you get it returned to you and torn up immediately.

If you make internet bookings, keep a copy of your original booking which shows what you actually requested. Also print off or keep copies of the acknowledgment emails from the car hire company.
