PLACES OF INTEREST IN LANZAROTE - TEGUISE

Teguise, the capital of Lanzarote up to 1852, has become one of the most important cultural and tourist centres on the island. Its streets with palaces, convents and squares preserve the unmistakable flavour of the passage of the centuries and narrate a thousand and one stories. Skirmishes bwetween Moors and Christians and filibuster attacks, among other events, marked the history of this splendid town.

Teguise, located in the centrer of the island, 10 km from the coast and about 220 m above sea level.

Teguise offers its visitors the opportunity to shop for gifts in the many crafts shops and bazaars. Besides, the open market held every Sunday in the streets and squares of the village gathers together the typical craftsmen of our well protected customs and traditions.

In the 1980´s Teguise was declared a combined architecturally historic-artistic centre as one of the oldest and most beautiful villages in the Canaries and is considered by both locals and visitors as a living museum.
