Teguise, the capital of Lanzarote up to 1852,
has become one of the most important cultural and tourist centres
on the island. Its streets with palaces, convents and squares
preserve the unmistakable flavour of the passage of the centuries
and narrate a thousand and one stories. Skirmishes bwetween
Moors and Christians and filibuster attacks, among other events,
marked the history of this splendid town.
Teguise, located in the centrer of the island, 10 km from the
coast and about 220 m above sea level.

Teguise offers its visitors the opportunity to shop for
gifts in the many crafts shops and bazaars. Besides, the
open market held every Sunday in the streets and squares
of the village gathers together the typical craftsmen
of our well protected customs and traditions. |

En los años ochenta se inicia
una fuerte campaña de restauración y rehabilitación,
consiguiendo la declaración de Conjunto Arquitectónico
Histórico-Artístico, recordando una de las
villas más antiguas de Canarias, que han escrito
las páginas más nobles y célebres
de la historia de Lanzarote.
La Villa de Teguise es uno de los principales centros
culturales y turísticos de la isla, convirtiéndose
los domingos en el centro de atracción de Lanzarote. |

In the 1980´s Teguise
was declared a combined architecturally historic-artistic
centre as one of the oldest and most beautiful villages
in the Canaries and is considered by both locals and visitors
as a living museum.
