Located in the centre of Güímar valley, it has a narrow strip of coast running for 2 kilometres.
Its economy has historically turned around agriculture which today has been relegated to second place by the service sector.
The borough has a long tradition in music which began in 1860 with Numancia, a musical band.
Minstrel groups (rondallas), chorales and folk groups continued to proliferate thus giving rise to the Juan Carlos 1st Auditorium-Conservatory inaugurated in 1994 by the Spanish Monarchs who granted the borough the means to develop its great passion.
Of tourist interest are the Antiguo Molino (Old Mill) and the Lavaderos spring.
