The history and life of the Candelaria borough are joined to the Patron of the Canaries, the Virgin of Candelaria, who appeared on the beach of Chimisay at the end of the 14th Century.
The people of Tenerife make annual pilgrimage to Candelaria from every corner of the island to venerate the Virgin.
The 2nd of February is the festival of Our Lady of Candelaria and the 15th of August celebrates her appearance with a re-enactment of the gathering of the Virgin by the local shepherds.
The image that is venerated today is not the original gothic sculpture that was lost during a storm in 1826 but is the replacement created by Master Fernando Estévez the following year.
