| San Cristóbal de la Laguna, founded in 1496, was the island's first capital.

The city centre, of great artistic and cultural value, was declared a Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO in 1999, part of which can be seen in its religious architecture: the monasteries of Las Clarisas and Las Catalinas, the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace and churches such as La Concepción.
Other places of interest are Lercaro Palace, House of the Jesuits, Salazar House, Dolores Hospital, the former convent of San Augustín, Van-Damme House, Ossuna House, the Peraza de Ayala house and chapel, the La Laguna Town Hall, San Miguel Hermitage, Anchieta House and the Nava Palace. |
