Since the 1980's the service sector, mainly in construction and tourism, has become more important, particularly with respect to golf.
The Amarilla Mountain natural habitat is an outstanding example of volcanic activity in which underwater erosion has resulted in a sheer wall of great height.
As well, the natural reserve at Roque de Jama, shared with Arona, has the largest volcanic dome on the island.
From various lookouts such as La Centinela, one can contemplate the beauty of the San Miguel countryside with its gorges and orchards.
Also interesting is the of La Hoya hamlet, of great historical importance given that it was the first settlement in the San Miguel de Abona borough.
The traditional fishing enclave of Los Abrigos on the coast has a little harbour and various seafood restaurants.
