Its history has been closely tied to the ups and downs of agricultural exports, growing in the good times and setting off migrations in the bad.
The borough's cultural and artistic wealth can be seen in its religious buildings: Santa Úrsula Church, San Clemente hermitage and hacienda and the San Luis de Francia Hermitage from the 17th Century.
The woods of firetree-heath and Canary pine further up have diminished due to tree felling for traditional charcoal making.
Recommended sites are: El Calvario, San Bartolomé Hermitage and the historic centre.
